Hodia, 8 years old from Nitiv, came to the Soroka emergency room a few months ago due to severe neck pain and double vision that worsened to the point of blurred vision.
In the examination done by the doctors, swelling was seen in Hodia's eyes and she was diagnosed with increased intracranial pressure and narrowing of the cerebral veins.
To ease her gratitude, she received medication.
But despite the high doses, her condition continued to worsen and a high fear of vision loss was raised.
This is due to severe narrowing of the veins draining her brain.
It was decided to insert a stent to treat the stenosis and thus allow good drainage of the cerebral veins and a decrease in intracranial pressure.

Dr. Anat Horev, director of the stroke and brain catheterization unit at Soroka Medical Center, from the Klalit group in an interview with Israel today, explained the complex procedure, "This is the case of a girl who was in danger of losing her sight and was treated with the implantation of a cerebral vein stent," she explains. "The treatment is relatively innovative and rare done in children at such a young age.
The treatment is offered as an alternative to brain surgery in which a drain is implanted which is supposed to drain the brain fluids into the abdominal cavity."
About the meeting with the very young patient, the doctor says, "I was excited to meet the girl when she came for the check-up and to hear that her vision is not in danger and she does not suffer from headaches."
This is an innovative treatment for the disease in general, but it is extremely rare that it was performed at such a young age.
It is important to note that most cases of cerebral venous catheterization in Israel are carried out at the Soroka University Medical Center and in light of the experience of the teams and the great effort the girl quickly recovered from the catheterization and now feels well, with a marked improvement in edema and vision.
"The catheterization treatment has a relatively low risk of complications with a very high efficiency. The catheterization approach is through a small puncture in an artery in the groin and the recovery from it is extremely short. The Soroka Medical Center is a national center for research and treatment of venous stenosis in the brain and specializes in catheterization of patients with increased intraorbital pressure (cerebropseudotumor ) or with tinnitus secondary to constrictions in the cerebral veins".
