Gas price brake calculated wrong? How to check your exemption

In March, the relief will come from the electricity and gas price brake.

But you should make sure that the amount was calculated correctly.

Frankfurt – In order to counteract the rising prices due to the energy crisis, the federal government has already decided on several relief packages for the population.

Part of the last package are the electricity and gas price brake.

Even if it will not be implemented until March 1st, citizens should benefit from the relief retrospectively as of January.

This means that in March consumers will receive relief for three months, and the amount will be deducted from the energy supplier's deduction.

To ensure that you have been fully discharged, you should carefully check the relevant letters from the energy suppliers.

As a rule, there is a contract with the landlord and the energy supplier, so information about relief is also sent to the landlord.

However, this must inform its tenants of the amount of the relief, reports the social association Germany VdK.

How to check whether the gas price brake was calculated incorrectly

In order to check whether the credits for gas and electricity have been calculated correctly, the following values ​​are important:

• The current electricity and gas consumption

• The electricity and gas consumption of the previous year

• The gas price brake caps the price per kilowatt hour at 12 cents

• With the electricity price brake, the price is capped at 40 cents per kilowatt hour

The relief is based on an estimated consumption, so this should be checked.

For this purpose, one orients oneself on the value of the last year.

The capped prices then apply to 80 percent of the consumption from the previous year.

To calculate how high the relief is, multiply 80 percent of the previous year's consumption by the prices of the electricity and gas price brake.

The current working price must be paid for the remaining consumption.

The federal government offers a gas cost calculator on its website that can be used to calculate the possible savings.

Check gas price brake - further relief for the population

The electricity and gas price brake is not the only relief that has been decided by the government.

Part of the pact is also a second heating cost surcharge in the form of a one-off payment and the implementation of citizen income, from which numerous citizens should benefit.

For the first time, students who should also receive a one-off payment were also taken into account in the recently decided relief.

After it was unclear for a long time when the 200 euros will be paid out to students, there is now at least a date from which one can apply for the relief.
