If you want to study medicine in Germany, you usually need a very good grade.

Not everyone gets a place.

An alternative are courses abroad.

The Center for Higher Education (CHE) estimates that more than 8,000 people take advantage of this opportunity.

That is almost every twelfth German medical student.

The study costs, application deadlines and admission procedures can vary greatly.

The CHE has therefore created an overview of international medical courses at 66 European universities.

In regular courses in EU countries, the same requirements and tuition fees apply to students from Germany as to local students.

About half of those who study abroad are enrolled in such regular medical courses of the host country.

27,000 euros per year at a private university in Austria

The most popular country is therefore Austria.

Around 2,500 people from Germany study medicine in the neighboring country.

If you get a place at one of the four state universities, you don't pay any tuition fees, but you have to pass an obligatory entrance test.

The most expensive university is also in Austria: According to the CHE evaluation, students at the Danube Private University pay 27,000 euros per academic year.

Fees of several thousand euros per year must also be expected in special medical courses for international students in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.

Most of the lectures are held in English, but there are also some courses in German.

The most popular countries for this are Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic.

In Hungary, for example, where there are more than 2,000 German medical students, the tuition fees vary between 8,000 and 16,000 euros per academic year.

In addition, admission to an international study place is usually granted via an entrance test, which is subject to a fee.

For such an investment, all offers and costs should be compared, advises the CHE.

This also included, for example, the cost of living, which varies from country to country.
