You have to have money, they say.

Customers of Commerzbank and Sparkasse could, at least temporarily, have liquidity problems in the future.

Munich – Take an ATM, a card, the right combination of numbers and an account that is not completely exhausted – violà: you have the cash in your hand in no time at all.

This trick at your own expense works 365 days a year, any time of the day or night.

Until now.

Because some banks are now imposing a curfew – for serious reasons.

Commerzbank, Sparkasse and Co.: Money beyond coins and bills

They don't talk about money, they say, and yet there are some recent innovations in the bills and coins that are literally ruling the world.

Because in the course of digitization, the monetary profession is also becoming increasingly virtual.

Money has long been sent via transfers as book money, now online banking is also practiced, digging for cryptocurrency on the net or sending money via payment services such as Paypal.

It is well known that nothing tangible wanders across the imaginary table.

The equivalent value, at least according to the theory, is supposed to be guaranteed by gold.

In 2017, the Deutsche Bundesbank completed the relocation of its reserves, and while inflation is noticeably reducing the account balance of many citizens, the price of gold has picked up significantly since the corona pandemic.

Digitization of money: thieves are shifting to more perfidious scams

The more digital the financial world becomes, the more complex the dangers for your own money.

Tricksters try in a variety of ways to steal someone else's property.

In addition to the so-called grandchild tricks, where those affected receive shocking calls, digital attacks such as phishing emails are increasing;

combined with current topics, the notifications often mislead customers to be careless.

On the other hand, what is less in the focus of the consumer is the danger that exists for the traditional cash.

Robbery and bank robbery?

But this happens more often than you think.

Although the number has fallen significantly from over 700 attacks on financial institutions in 2002 - in 2021 it was almost thirty - but the days of physical attacks on banks are not quite over.

ATM demolitions are increasing - first banks are taking action

The number of machine detonations is also worrying.

The Tagesschau

reported that

in 2022, statistically speaking, an ATM would be the target of such an attack every day.

And that's why the first banks are now closing their doors at night: In many places, Commerzbank no longer offers customers access to the branches and ATMs between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This should not only protect the devices themselves, but also the branches and potential other visitors.

The savings bank, which has already closed self-service branches in the Munich area due to a massive problem with blown up machines, is doing the same as its colleague.

What does that mean for customers?

If you urgently need cash, you can often withdraw money at petrol stations or in supermarkets using the so-called cash-back service.

In the middle of the night, however, these options are likely to be few and far between.

In this case, you have to resort to freely accessible ATMs, which are usually found on busy streets or large squares.

Here, however, a fairly high provision fee has to be paid regularly.
