When it comes to lawn care in spring, the right order is crucial to enjoying a lush green in summer.

What's first?

In the spring, when the last snow has melted in the garden and the worst of the frost is over, lawn care starts again.

But what is first on the agenda: mowing the lawn, fertilizing or scarifying?

If you want to enjoy a well-groomed, green lawn in summer, you should definitely observe the correct order.

1st step: prepare the lawn

In order to be able to work on the lawn after the long winter and to offer the grass optimal growth conditions, the lawn area must first be cleared of all debris.

This includes, above all, picking up leaves and small branches.

If molehills bother you in your garden, you can remove the dark heaps of earth with a shovel.

Step 2: Mowing the lawn for the first time after the winter

The ideal time to mow the lawn for the first time in spring is from the growth phase in March or April, when the blades of grass have reached a height of approx. seven centimetres.

However, the cutting height should not be too short, otherwise the lawn will dry out and brown spots may form.

For the first cut, about four to five centimeters are ideal.

Any grass left behind should be removed so that the grass gets enough light.

Step 3: Scarify the lawn

If the lawn is covered with moss and lichen, it is advisable to scarify the lawn next.

The lawn thatch is removed with a scarifier, which contributes to better aeration of the lawn.

However, you should never scarify too deep, otherwise the turf can be damaged.

For the first scarifying in spring, however, you should only start after the second or third mowing.

This ensures that the lawn is already in the growth phase.

4th step: lime the lawn

When mosses populate your lawn, the soil is often too acidic.

It may then be necessary to lime the lawn before fertilizing.

Lime then shifts the pH value in favor of the lawn plants and restores the much-needed balance.

You can find out whether the soil is actually too acidic (pH below 7) with a test kit from the hardware store.

Step 5: Spread fertilizer on the lawn

The lawn plants urgently need nutrients again after the winter.

Special lawn fertilizers are commercially available that provide your green area with the ideal mix of nutrients.

You can start fertilizing your lawn from around mid-March to mid-April.

If lime has been used before, the lime should have already dissolved.

An overcast day, just before it rains, is best for applying the fertilizer, as that is when the fertilizers are flushed right into the soil to the roots.

Step 6: Overseed the lawn

The last step in the sequence is reseeding the lawn.

This may be necessary if larger holes have formed in the lawn or the lawn was heavily covered in moss and thinned out after scarifying.

The best time to overseed a lawn in spring is in April or May, when the soil temperature has reached at least ten degrees.

The choice of lawn seed should be based on the individual conditions in the garden, because heavy soil or shady lawns place different demands on the lawn seed.
