A method to overcome insomnia (@dr.karanr)
Sleep is one of the most important elements in our daily lives.
It not only relaxes the body and allows it to gain strength, but it also allows tissues and organs to regenerate and repair problems.
New research provides evidence of how important sleep is to heart health.
The study, published in the journal Clinical Cardiology, and included a meta-analysis of previously published studies, found a potential link between insomnia and heart attack risk, especially in women.
Because insomnia is closely related to cardiovascular disease, the researchers decided to evaluate the condition's suitability as a potential risk factor for myocardial infarction or heart attack.
The analysis of the studies on insomnia revealed a significant connection between the two conditions.
People with insomnia were found to be 1.69 times more likely to have a heart attack than people without insomnia.
The team also found an association between an increased risk of myocardial infarction and the duration of sleep at night.
People who slept five hours or less were found to be at the highest risk of heart attack.
They were 1.56 times more likely to have a heart attack than people who slept seven or eight hours a night.
Because insomnia is the most common sleep disorder affecting the general population, the researchers said their findings should prompt the medical community to consider it as a risk factor for myocardial infarction.
According to them, sleep should also be included in the guidelines for preventing heart attacks.

"Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, but in many ways, it's no longer just a disease, it's more of a life choice. We just don't prioritize sleep properly. Our research showed that people with insomnia are more likely to have a heart attack regardless of age , and heart attacks occurred more often in women with insomnia," said study author Yumana A.
Dean, a medical student at Alexandria University in Alexandria, Egypt, as quoted in Medical News.
One of the explanations for the connection between sleep and heart problems is the fact that lack of sleep increases the stress hormone - cortisol, which in turn can cause high blood pressure and various heart problems.
