Traveling can be beautiful.

And dangerous?

How dangerous train stations are can now be seen from the response of the federal government to a request from the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

Accordingly, the Hamburg Central Station is one of the most dangerous stations in Germany for travelers, as the dpa news agency reports.

In terms of violent crime, Hamburg was in first place last year, ahead of Hanover and Nuremberg.

According to the Federal Police, in 2022 there were more than 23,000 violent crimes at German train stations and on trains.

Deutsche Bahn emphasized that train stations are objectively safer than most public spaces.

A railway spokeswoman said that around 540,000 travelers and visitors passed through Germany's busiest train station, Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, every day.

"On average, less than two violent crimes occur here every day." Based on the number of travellers, passers-by and visitors, the risk of becoming a victim of a crime is very low.

"And still, of course, an incentive for us to reduce the number even further."

Crime focus: Nuremberg main station

When it comes to crimes such as property crime, sexual offenses or violations of the Narcotics and Weapons Act, Hamburg Central Station is not among the top three stations with the most crimes - unlike Nuremberg.

According to figures from the federal government, this seems to have been a crime focus in the past year.

Not only did he rank in the top three for violent crimes, but also for sex and property crimes.

Most weapon offenses and crimes related to drugs were registered at the main train station in Dortmund.

The federal police found most property crimes and sexual offenses at Cologne Central Station.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the main stations in Frankfurt am Main and Munich are the busiest after Hamburg.

Berlin Central Station ranks fourth with around 329,000 people per day.

The frequency of controls at the respective train station also has an influence on the number of offenses detected.

A comparison of the data with the previous year is not very meaningful, since the corona protection measures in 2021 still had a significant impact on mobility - and thus also on the number of people in public spaces.
