Shortly before the release of his new album, British pop star Ed Sheeran has opened up about a dark period in his life - and the influence it has on his music.

In early 2022, "a series of events" changed his life, mental health and the way he viewed art, the singer wrote in a post on Instagram.

Sheeran said his pregnant wife was diagnosed with a tumor that couldn't be treated until she was born.

His best friend, music producer Jamal Edwards, died.

And a court case over allegations of plagiarism weighed on him.

Sheeran won the process.

He did not comment on the current state of health of his wife.

The events plunged him into a spiral of "fear, depression and worry," said the 32-year-old.

"I felt like I was drowning, head under water, looking up, but unable to break through to get air."

An album with the »deepest, darkest thoughts«

Apparently, his music helped him process it: "Writing songs is my therapy." He wrote without thinking about how the songs would be.

"In just over a week, I replaced a decade's worth of work with my deepest, darkest thoughts," Sheeran says.

Sheeran has been married to his childhood sweetheart, Cherry Seaborn, since 2019.

The couple have two daughters, two-year-old Lyra Antarctica and Jupiter, born in May 2022.

The new album Sheerans is scheduled for release on May 5th.

The title is the mathematical symbol for subtraction (-).
