Yeah, that's a weird title and why would mice drink soft drinks? But that's the world, and in any case it seems to us that the mice were also happy with the results

A new study examining the effects of soda on mice found that consuming Pepsi and Coca-Cola enlarged their testicles and increased their testosterone levels.

However, as the authors point out, this runs counter to previous findings that found harmful effects of soda consumption on fertility.

One cited survey found that sperm quality decreased by 30 percent among men who drank one liter of cola each day, while another study indicated "a negative effect of cola and caffeinated soft drinks on sperm volume, count, and concentration."

In preliminary studies it was found that Coca-Cola and Pepsi can reduce the mass of the ovaries in mice, but the effect of carbonated drinks on the size of the testicles has not yet been studied.

In the current study published in Acta Endocrinol, researchers gave mice Pepsi, Coca-Cola or water (the control group) for 15 days.

Pepsi and Coca-Cola were served alone, or as a 50 percent mixture with water.

In addition to the expected weight gain in mice consuming the sugary drinks, the team found some surprising effects.

"Testosterone concentrations in the blood serum of all mice were increased after treatment with Pepsi and Coca-Cola," the team wrote in the study, adding that "the results indicated that high doses of Pepsi and Coca-Cola can improve the male hormone testosterone."

In addition, the size of the testis of the mice that drank only Pepsi or only Coca-Cola increased significantly compared to both the control group and mice that drank a cola drink diluted in water.

"The results indicated that higher doses of cola drinks can improve the length and width of the testis diameter, and that they promote testicular growth in mice," the team wrote.

However, they emphasize that other studies have found an array of negative medical effects of sugary soft drinks—from obesity to cardiovascular disease—and note that more research is needed.

"Our findings provided the scientific basis for a full understanding of the effects of carbonated beverages and their mechanism on human development and reproductive functions, but are also beneficial for the prevention of prostate dysfunction and cancer," the team wrote.
