Music of her own helped Shakira navigate her split from soccer star Gerard Piqué.
"My songs are the best therapy," said the Colombian singer on Monday in her first interview since the release of her new hit "BZRP Music Session #53".
The songs are "more effective than a session with a psychologist or psychoanalyst."
The recording of the hit in January was "an outlet" for her, said the 46-year-old in an interview on Mexican television.
"I went into the studio in one state of mind and came out in another." Without that song and a chance to reflect on the pain, she "won't be where I am today," Shakira added.
"You swapped a Ferrari for a Twingo"
With the text of her new single, the singer obviously shares against Piqué and his new partner – including the lines: “A lot of sport, but also train your brain a bit”, “You swapped a Ferrari for a Twingo” and “I will not come back to you even if you cry or beg".
With more than 60 million albums sold, Shakira is one of the most successful musicians of the past two decades.
In June last year, she separated from Piqué after twelve years of relationship.
The two have two children together and have been ranked among the top 10 "most powerful couples in the world" by the US magazine "Forbes" several times.
Shakira spoke about the split in an interview last fall.
She suffered greatly from it: "There were days when I was broken on the ground."
The reports, Shakira said at the time, also put a lot of strain on the children: »Paparazzi sit in front of my house 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
There is no place where I can hide from them with my children except in my house.” She cannot go for a walk without being accompanied by photographers.
