Tourists on a tour boat sailing near a private island in the Bahamas were surprised to spot a hammerhead shark in the water - but were even more shocked when a brave dog jumped in to confront the marine predator.
"Whether he wanted to protect his island or just wanted to play with what he thought was a big fish in the water, he just started chasing it," Rebecca Lightburn, reservations manager for boat rental company Exuma Water Sports, told the New York Post.
The dog paddled around the shark for about two and a half to three minutes, and was able to drive off the confused shark, which "had no idea what was attacking it," Lightburn said.

The tour company published a video of the incident that took place about two weeks ago, in which the screams and pleas of the boat passengers are heard asking the dog to go back and run for its life.

Hammerhead sharks can reach a size of between 3 and 5 meters in length and a weight of about 80 kg C. On the other hand, the Potcake Bahamian dog reaches a height of 60 cm and weighs 20 kg, and is the pet of the nanny who manages the private island.
"The dog always comes running to chase the boat and say hello," said Lightburn, and it has become part of the tour - we always wave hello to the dog as we pass it.

This is also what happened on Wednesday two weeks ago, the 30 or so tourists and two crew members on board suddenly noticed a shark in the water.
"We slowed down to take a look at it, and the shark approached the shore and while we were all looking at the shark - the dog also noticed it and jumped into the water," she explained.
Quite a few islands in the area belong to stars like Johnny Depp, Tyler Perry and David Copperfield, but the dog does not belong to any of them.
