"We are concerned that China is using TikTok to collect private data from American citizens."

White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said so in a press briefing.

"We have been clear that the app poses a problem and we are concerned for our national security, which is why we asked Congress to act," he explained about the measure, approved by the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which gives Joe Biden the power to ban TikTok and other apps.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House has in fact given the green light to the provision that gives the President of the United States the power to ban applications.

With 24 votes in favor and 16 against, the deputies approved the measure which provides for the possibility for the Biden administration to

ban TikTok nationwide under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act

.

The measure explicitly names TikTok and allows Biden to impose sanctions and even a ban if the voluntary and knowing transfer of user data to anyone who works for the Chinese government or under its influence is ascertained.

The measure is expected to pass the House as a whole but its fate in the Senate is unclear.
