(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 02 - American jazz musician Wayne Shorter, saxophonist considered one of the greatest jazz composers in the United States, died in Los Angeles at the age of 89.
His agent Alisse Kingsley confirmed this to AFP in a written message.
Born August 25, 1933 in Newark, his influence on jazz has lasted more than half a century.
In its obituary, the New York Times calls him an "innovative", "intrepid" and "enigmatic" musician, recalling that he has played with jazz greats, including Miles Davis, and that he excelled on both soprano and tenor saxophones, particularly with the his Weather Report group.
Shorter was one of the last living legends of jazz, a musical genre that he had embraced in the 1950s, after an initial career as a clarinetist.
With brother Alan Shorter (1932-1988), they played bebop, calling themselves "Mr Weird" and "Doc Strange".
