2023-03-02T16:05:26.346Z

Paris: ''It is a common commitment that we have made together'. Urso 'It will also be a signal for other open dossiers' (ANSA)

France pushes to stop the sale of cars with diesel and petrol engines by 2035. But Italy opposes it and announces a vote against the initiative.

"We're working on the details to make sure

this joint commitment we've all made together" to stop the sale of new cars with petrol and diesel engines in 2035 "is in place when it needs to be in place."

This was stated by the French Minister for Industry,

Roland Lescure

, arriving at the EU Competitiveness Council.

"The industry is facing challenges, it is organizing itself to find the right path. But the path must be in line with the goal that we have all decided together and that consumers and our citizens are waiting for", he highlighted.

"Tomorrow Italy will vote against" the stop to polluting cars from 2035 and it will be "a signal as regards all the activity that the Commission

, the EU, will do - we will do together with them - on the dossiers that are still open. only the automotive sector, but also, for example, packaging rather than eco-textile".

This was stated

by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso

at a press point in Brussels.

"We ask for reasonableness, we are a pragmatic government that looks above all at the sustainability of our social system", she explained.

"Looking forward, we know that the real big confrontation will be in 2026 when with the review clause (contained in the regulation, ed) we will be able to question this path again in a very different climate, I hope. With a new EU Parliament in which awareness increases that needs to be changed and with a new Commission that will come out next year", explained Urso.

"We do not question the dates, 2035 and 2050. But at the same time we protect workers and businesses and for this reason we ask that the stages and methods for reaching those appointments be changed, so that they are sustainable.

For example, we do not see why only electricity should be considered.

Electricity is not a religion, it is a technology like any other.

If biofuels can enable us to achieve the same goals why not use them

,” he noted.

"I reiterated Italy's assertive presence in European bodies today at the Competitiveness Council. It was also an opportunity for some bilaterals to develop a common policy that makes the Commission understand that an era has changed: there was a pandemic , war, Europe is threatened by global competitiveness. And as regards the double transition, which we share in ecological objectives", we need "a pragmatic, concrete, and not an ideological, messianic vision, the result of a that belongs to the past".

This was stated by the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso speaking with reporters in Brussels.

In view of tomorrow's vote on the stop to internal combustion engines from 2035 "

we await the reflections of other countries in the full awareness that ours is above all a signal to be given, a wake-up call to all of Europe, not to take anything for granted.

And to say that Italy exists"; Urso explained, noting how Poland and Bulgaria have "joined" the Italian position. "We are in Europe, we decide in Europe and we express our needs, interests, expectations in Europe , the dreams, the hopes of the Italian people, which we hope are also the hopes of other workers", he added.

"That a certain awareness" on industry and green policy dossiers, but also in general, "is increasingly developing in Europe is also demonstrated by the vote in the EP on the stop to cars. If it had taken place for three months there would have been almost unanimity in favour, instead there was a rather small majority, and

I am convinced that in 2024 a majority will emerge in the Eurochamber more capable of fully interpreting the interests and ideals of our common European home

.

And I think this will also find expression in the new Commission": said the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso speaking with reporters in Brussels. " We also work with this perspective, with a strategy that is very clear and it enucleates in every act because we are convinced of what national interests we must protect", added Urso, remarking: "all our interlocutors have listened to our position, Italy is back on the field".
