ROME - In the first two months of the year, 412,385 passports were issued with a forecast of reaching around two and a half million expatriation documents in the course of 2023.

These are the figures released today by the state police that seem to bring the emergency back in light of the extraordinary plan, "a mighty effort", put in place by the police stations throughout the territory.

An affair that in recent weeks had come to the attention of Parliament with some questions that had raised the problem of delays in issuing the document in various provinces.

Yesterday alone 12,007 passports were issued.

"The extraordinary measures adopted by the police headquarters - a note states - make it possible to reassure citizens of the positive outcome, within the established times, of all requests, even those not characterized by urgency".

An organizational effort implemented on the territory with the aggregation of personnel, the creation of task forces dedicated exclusively to the acquisition of user requests and their processing.

Furthermore, to overcome the critical issues, the days and times of opening to the public have been extended and in some cases real open days on weekends which have allowed the acquisition of requests characterized by urgency in alternative ways to the online agenda .

"The launch of daily monitoring of the same agenda in order to remodulate ad horas the availability for reservations, have allowed - continues the note - to respond effectively to the massive and unexpected surge in requests".

The available data show, net of the decrease recorded in the pandemic period, the increase in passports issued in the past year (1,815,828) compared to 2019 (1,783,415), 2018 (1,649,324) and 2017 ( 1,485,057).

At the same time, discussions continued between the Department of Public Safety and the State Printing Office and Mint, for the adoption of initiatives aimed at increasing the production capacity of blank passbooks.

"To guarantee the constitutional right to freedom of movement - explains the police note - the requests supported by adequate and documented reasons of urgency (trips for study, work, health and tourism reasons) are, in any case, received and processed by part of the competent Offices, even outside of the reservation made through the online Agenda platform".

Furthermore, taking into account that over 11 million passports are valid and that the documents expiring on 31 December are approximately 900,000, it is believed that the extraordinary measures adopted by the Police Headquarters make it possible to reassure citizens about the positive outcome, within foreseen, of all requests, even if not characterized by urgency.
