Turkish rescue workers rescued a dog alive from the rubble more than three weeks after the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

As reported by several Turkish media, the dog named Aleks was handed over to an animal protection organization in the heavily damaged city of Antakya after its rescue on Wednesday.

A video of the rescue operation distributed by the DHA news agency shows rescuers calling for the trapped animal between large concrete slabs.

“Is he coming?” asks a rescuer, crouching in a narrow hollow in the rubble of a collapsed house.

"Aleks, come here, my dear," someone calls the dog.

"Well done, son." Additional footage shows rescuers picking up the dog and giving it water.

"Everything alive matters to us, people as well as animals," a local resident said after the rescue, according to the DHA.

Hundreds of buried cats, dogs, rabbits and birds have been recovered in Antakya.

Stories about this always cause a stir in Turkey, which is in a state of shock after what the World Health Organization (WHO) says was the most devastating natural disaster in Europe for 100 years.

At the beginning of February, two earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 shook southeast Turkey and northwest Syria.

More than 50,000 people lost their lives in Turkey and Syria.

According to the government there, more than 173,000 buildings in eleven provinces of the country were destroyed in Turkey alone.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan this week asked the people of Turkey for forgiveness for delays in aid after the strong earthquakes exactly three weeks ago.

Due to the great destruction, the weather conditions and the damage to the infrastructure, it was not possible to work with the "desired effectiveness" in the first few days, said Erdoğan.

After the severe earthquake, criticism of the government's crisis management was raised.
