A 41-year-old man was arrested in the United States by the FBI after an explosive device was discovered in his luggage, before he boarded an Allegiant Air flight from Orlando, Florida to Lehigh Valley International Airport in Pennsylvania.

The Paddle Your Own Kanoo website reports that the incident happened on Monday morning, and the name of the passenger is Mark Muffley.

He now faces serious federal charges, which include attempting to load an explosive device onto an aircraft, as well as possession of an explosive device at an airport.

"Significant risk to the plane and passengers"

Mapley was arrested by the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the FBI was immediately called to the scene and took him into custody.

Later, in an affidavit published by the FBI, it was stated that "the explosives (were) potentially a significant risk to the plane and the passengers."

So far, the motive behind Muffley's actions has yet to be revealed.

According to local court documents, TSA personnel were performing routine mirror checks of luggage at the check-in stations, when the alarm alerted to a suspicious object in that passenger's bag, while raiding the Allegiant Air line.

Among his personal belongings was found a round object, with a diameter of about 7.5 centimeters and wrapped in a wax-like substance, which according to experts was an explosive device.

An FBI saboteur was called to the scene, and after a careful examination, it turned out that this compound contained, among other things, a powder similar to the one found in Di-Nor fireworks.

The object had two fuses connected between them.

Investigators also found a butane compound, a lighter, a pipe with traces of white powder on it, a portable drill with batteries and two electrical outlets.
