How much money do families get?

All information about the reform.

Hamm - The federal government wants to combat child poverty in NRW and throughout Germany.

In 2025, the new basic child security system is to replace the current child benefit system.

Low-income families in particular should be relieved in this way and the chances of the children later in life increased.

That's how the Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) wants it.

The planned reform is intended to bundle previous benefits such as child benefit, child allowance, child allowance, parts of the "education and participation package" and more - and also simplify their accessibility, reports wa.de.

Because at the moment parents have to laboriously apply to various authorities for supportive measures.

As a result, many families do not assert their claims against the state.

The basic child security clears up with it.

Everything should become more uniform, simpler and more targeted.

But what does basic child security actually include?

According to a draft by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, it consists of two parts:

  • basic amount

  • additional amount

According to the plan, the basic amount will at least correspond to the child benefit in its current form.

After a surprisingly strong increase at the beginning of 2023, that is currently 250 euros per month for each child.

The amount is to be reviewed every two years and adjusted if necessary.

Important: The basic amount is fixed.

It cannot be offset against social benefits such as the parents' citizenship allowance.

Basic child security 2025: the basic amount is guaranteed, the additional amount is not

The situation is different with the second component of basic child security: the additional contribution.

In addition to a lump sum for education and participation (currently 15 euros), the additional contribution should include a lump sum for children's housing costs (currently 150 euros).

Unlike the guaranteed basic amount, it depends on the parents' income.

The higher this is, the less money the family receives.

Above a certain annual income, there is nothing more.

This limit has not yet been determined.

Like child benefit, basic child security is intended to support all children from birth to the age of 18.

Anyone doing an apprenticeship can receive basic child security up to their 25th birthday.

Those who are studying will be supported for two more years.

Adult children who no longer live with their parents should receive the amount directly.

Basic child security 2025: Application should be easier for families

A core idea of the reform is the simplification of the system.

Parents should no longer have to get help, rather the state has a "duty to deliver", as Family Minister Paus says.

However, basic child security is also not possible without an application.

Thanks to a new online portal, however, it should be easier to apply for the benefit.

It is also planned that parents will no longer have to provide proof of income in the future.

The new children's basic security office should receive the relevant information directly from the tax office.

Basic child security in 2025: do parents have to do something now?

Parents do not have to take action at the moment.

You can't apply for any money yet, because basic child security has so far only been a political project - albeit a concrete one.

The draft law should be ready after the summer break.

Then the legislative process begins.

The aim is for basic child security to come into force in 2025.

Currently, however, a dispute has broken out about possible additional costs of the reform compared to the current system - with Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) at the helm.

It is therefore quite possible that the key points presented in January 2023 will be postponed again.

In the fight against inflation, the ECB recently increased the key interest rate.

Those who suffer are homebuyers.

Loans could get even more expensive over the course of 2023.
