After the attacks on New Year's Eve in Berlin, the public prosecutor's office filed the first charges against those allegedly involved.

The Tiergarten district court has two cases against a 16- and 22-year-old, said a spokeswoman.

In both cases, it is still being examined whether the evidence from the public prosecutor's office appears sufficient for a trial.

The RBB had previously reported.

According to a spokesman, the Berlin public prosecutor's office has so far received 50 proceedings relating to the riots at the turn of the year.

About two-thirds of the cases are still being processed by the police.

Attack while clearing an intersection

The first charges relate to allegations of physical assault on law enforcement officials.

The 16-year-old is said to have attacked police officers who wanted to clear an intersection on January 1 shortly after midnight with around 80 other people in Prenzlauer Berg.

According to the court spokeswoman, he is also accused of assault and resisting law enforcement officials.

Since it is a juvenile, the trial before the juvenile court would be closed to the public.

The 22-year-old is also involved in attempted dangerous bodily harm.

He is said to have thrown a firecracker at a police officer who is said to have supported the fire brigade in extinguishing an apartment fire in Gesundbrunnen.

Nationwide attacks on police officers and firefighters

On the night of New Year's Day, there were violent attacks on police officers and firefighters throughout Germany.

The capital was particularly affected.

According to the Berlin police, there were 128 criminal charges, in 79 cases police officers were affected, in 49 firefighters.

So far, 47 suspected attackers have been identified, a police spokeswoman said.

39 of them are said to have attacked police officers, the other rescue workers.

At the public prosecutor's office, cases are processed by a department that focuses on violent crimes in the context of major sporting events ("hooliganism").

According to the RBB report, a total of around 150 procedures for the incidents at the turn of the year are expected there.

According to the public prosecutor's office, some proceedings against unknown perpetrators or against children who are under criminal responsibility have been discontinued.
