Another recall.

This time it hits a candy that often has to be withdrawn from sale due to contamination.

Dortmund – According to the Federal Association of Food Inspectors in Germany e.

V. (BVLK), products with a high proportion of sesame are particularly at risk of being contaminated with salmonella.

Looking at the list of candy recalls from the past year seems to confirm that.

In 2022 alone, the number of warnings about a specialty made from sesame will add up to double digits.

Another recall because of salmonella - do not eat the candy specialty

In 2023 this “trend” appears to be continuing.

Halva with pistachios was already affected by a recall at the beginning of February.

The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) is now providing information about the next sales stop for halva - a confectionery specialty that originally comes from India, Iran, Pakistan or Southeast, Central and Eastern Europe.

It usually consists of sunflower seeds, pistachios or sesame.

Specifically, the recall is about a product from Belinay Feinkost GmbH.

The Bremen-based company announced on Wednesday (February 22) that Salmonella had been detected in one of its products.

The BVL only published the recall two days later.

The following details are known about the current product warning:

  • Product: Koska Sade Helva (Tahin Halva)

  • Brand: Koska

  • Content: 200 grams

  • Best before date (MHD): 09/10/2024

  • Lot identification:

    90-2535/22

Candy recall due to salmonella - product not affected for the first time

The explosive thing is that it is not the first time that salmonella has been found in a Koska brand product.

Most recently, halva with pistachios was also contaminated with the pathogens.

The BVLK states that since 2020, more and more tahini or halva products have been contaminated with salmonella - the food usually comes from Turkey, Jordan, Syria and occasionally from Germany.

Since halva is usually consumed immediately and not heated beforehand, it is particularly risky if the confectionery is contaminated with salmonella.

Against this background, Baden-Württemberg, among others, suggested strengthening import controls for sesame products.

One reason why Halva recalls have increased in recent years.

According to the authorities, it is currently not clear how the contamination with salmonella in the products came about.

Exact information about the production, cultivation or harvesting of the raw material is rarely available, making it difficult to trace a possible source of error.

Recall because of salmonella - these symptoms threaten when consumed

The BVLK, but also the BVL and the Robert Koch Institute advise consumers to always take the halva recalls seriously and never eat the candy.

Because with a salmonella infection (salmonellosis) is not to be trifled with.

Typical symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal pain and occasionally vomiting and a slight fever, reports RUHR24.

Normally, the disease manifests itself within a few days after infection, i.e. after eating the bacteria, and subsides on its own after a short time.

If this is not the case, it is advisable to consult a doctor and point out a possible salmonella infection.

The RKI adds that infants, small children, senior citizens and people with a weakened immune system can develop serious illnesses.

You should therefore be particularly careful.

Recall of confectionery specialty – affected customers need to know that now

Belinay Feinkost GmbH does not point out possible health risks in the recall letter.

However, the company states that they reacted immediately to the finding of salmonella in the halva and removed the candy from sale.

Customers who have the specialty at home are asked to return it.

You then get a corresponding credit, according to Belinay Feinkost GmbH.

However, there is no information as to where the halva was sold.

According to the BVL, however, it was only available in the federal states of Bremen, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

However, RUHR24 research revealed that you can also buy Koska Halva from various online shops.

Customers who enjoy eating the confectionery specialty should therefore check to see if they may be affected by the recall.
