ROME - "Claudio Abate. Sensitive surface" is the title of the exhibition that MAXXI in Rome in the EXTRA space is dedicating from 3 March to 4 June to the great artists' photographer.

Curated by Ilaria Bernardi and MAXXI Arte director Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, the exhibition is a visual account of the author through a selection of over 150 images, including wall photographs and sample cases, which allows you to take a journey through the history of art of the twentieth century, between the artistic and theatrical avant-gardes of the sixties and seventies, and which revives unrepeatable performances.

The exhibition is a tribute to the great photographer of the twentieth century who lived and worked with the most prestigious Italian and international artists, from Carmelo Bene to the Living Theatre, from Jannis Kounellis and Pino Pascali to Joseph Beuys,

The exhibition traces Abate's production through the "lens" of his archive - managed by his children Giulia and Riccardo - which today constitutes a precious heritage for historical-artistic studies on Italian and international art.

In fact, Abate's production ranges from photographs of Arte Povera works, artists and exhibitions to shots of the art and exhibition scene in Italy and abroad, up to photographs of theatre, fashion, customs and current events.

The exhibition, which brings together famous, little known, unpublished images, some restored with the original iron frames and others printed for the event, is developed in thematic sections, enriched by in-depth showcases and archive documents, films, contributions period audio and testimonials,

"Claudio Abate's exhibition pays homage to a great protagonist of the Italian art scene who knew how to be the author, witness, director of contemporary visual culture and act as a point of reference for artists of different generations, from the late 1960s to his recent death ", declared Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, director of MAXXI Arte, at the presentation of the event.

"Dedicating an exhibition to Claudio Abate - commented the curator Ilaria Bernardi - means paying homage to a photographer who had, among others, three important skills: to always be 'in the right place and at the right time', to weave lasting relationships with artists and with exhibition spaces in Rome, in Italy and abroad, and at the same time being an art and theater photographer, a photojournalist for magazines,

The installation of the exhibition, with the general coordination of Simona Antonacci, the project by Silvia La Pergola and the graphic design of Alberto Berengo Gardin, is fluid and enveloping: the images of the artists stand out on the curved magenta red walls, which refer to the theater .

Furthermore, on the occasion of the exhibition, a podcast was produced with contributions from figures from the art world who have known and collaborated with Claudio Abate.
