(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 05 - Everything Everywhere All at Once depopulated at the Independent Spirits Awards winning seven awards out of eight nominations and only because Ke Huy Quan beat out costar Jamie Lee Curtis in the best supporting category which this year, as for best actor gone to Michelle Yeoh, was gender-neutral.

The indie movie by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (the Daniels) also won statuettes for best film, best debut (Stephanie Hsu), best director and screenplay (both to the Daniels) and best editing (Paul Rogers): thanks to a plot which mixes adventure, action, science fiction, family drama with LGBT themes, comedy and romance with the irresistible attraction of the metaverse as a backdrop.

Tar collected the crumbs thanks to the cinematography of Florian Hoffmeister, one of the seven nominations for the Indies of Todd Field's film.

Aftersun, released as Everything Everywhere by A24, won debut film, while Ricky D'Ambrose's The Cathedral (Mubi) won the John Cassevetes Award for Best Film Made Under $1 Million.

Sarah Polley's Women Talking received the Robert Altman Award.

The Independent Spirit Awards are among the latest awards in the category ahead of the Academy Awards ceremony on March 12 in which, with eleven nominations, Everything Everywhere has been the frontrunner for weeks.

The Daniels' film arrives at the 'night of the stars' after collecting the most prestigious awards from the Pga, Dga, Sag, two Golden Globes, as well as being, with over one hundred million dollars, the box office champion in the history of A24, the film company that takes its name from the Rome-Teramo motorway.

At the Indies, Everything Everywhere beat rivals such as Luca Guadagnino's Bones and All, Todd Field's Tár, Ellie Foumbi's Our Father and Polley's Women Talking in the Best Picture quintet.

However, Nothing New on the Western Front was in the competition, Edward Berger's anti-war saga on the trenches of the First World War which had put the Daniels' effort on the ropes at the BAFTAs with seven awards out of 14 nominations.
