Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has apologized to the families of victims of the train crash that left
57 dead
and sparked immense anger in Greece.
"As Prime Minister, I owe everyone, but especially the relatives of the victims, to ask forgiveness," he wrote in a message addressed to the Greeks and posted on his Facebook account.
“In 2023 Greece, it is not possible for two trains to travel in opposite directions on the same line and not be noticed by anyone.”
THE PROTEST IN ATHENS
Approximately 7,500 people, according to the police, this morning demonstrated their anger in front of the Parliament of Athens.
The protesters, who notably waved "Down with murderous governments" placards, responded to the call of students, railway workers and public sector employees as trains and subways went on strike across the country.
And violent clashes between police and protesters were recorded on the sidelines of the demonstration.
In front of the Parliament, some demonstrators set fire to rubbish bins and threw Molotov cocktails.
Police responded with tear gas, stun grenades and lightening charges.
