Food can make us feel many things and if we try hard enough, it may even allow a momentary escape from the Israeli winter to a distant and warm destination on the other side of the world.

The fruits we will tell you about here, it is important to admit, are probably no healthier than an apple, banana or avocado.

Most of them are also not easy to get in Israel and in most cases they will be more expensive or less tasty.

And despite all this, we believe it's worth it for you to get to know the strange stories behind them, as well as the expected, but also surprising, ways in which they will affect you.

1. "Buddha's Hand"

What is?

The official name of this fruit in Hebrew is "Etrog of the fingers".

This is a very specific type of Etherog that we are all familiar with, but its shape, as you can guess, looks a bit like a hand, doubt human, doubt alien.

It is more common in the Far East, in areas such as China and Northeast India, but surprisingly, it also has a Jewish connection.

During World War II, Jews in the Shanghai ghetto used it without choice as one of the four species, after the Japanese army cut down the only etrog tree in the city during the invasion.

Why is it good?

With all due respect to the fruit's interesting history and memorable appearance, it also has some noteworthy nutrients.

It contains respectable amounts of vitamin C, calcium and dietary fiber, while it contains almost no fats and carbohydrates.

In traditional Chinese medicine, its oil is also used in various types of treatments, because it is attributed properties that reduce pain, improve digestion and reduce inflammation, although the scientific basis for these uses is insufficient.

Reduces pain.

2. "Miracle Fruit"

If this obligatory name managed to surprise you, wait until you find out that its other name is the "enchanted fruit".

It is a fruit that grows mainly in West Africa and its "superpower", it turns out, is that it helps sweeten anything, without the need for sugar.

In fact, this fruit can be used as a natural sugar substitute, although so far it has failed commercially in competition with more familiar and common substitutes.

Why is it good?

The enchanted wonder fruit, or by its third and less sexy name "red grape", contains a unique chemical compound that makes it so magical.

This compound is called Miraculin and it affects the taste buds in a somewhat strange way.

It binds to the taste receptors on the tongue and causes them to interpret a sour taste as sweet.

This phenomenon lasts not only when you eat the fruit itself, but for up to half an hour or until you wash your tongue.

3. Kiwano Hotel (Horned Melon)

What is?

This fruit is a rather odd combination - although it is a hotel, its taste is more like that of a banana and its appearance is reminiscent of ancient versions of a cucumber.

It is yellowish-green inside, its shell is full of thorns and it comes from South Africa, although it also has a connection to Israel.

In 2017, Israeli researchers at the Middle Arab R&D developed a new variety of this strange cucumber, which contains more nutrients and, according to them, tastes better than its relatives in Africa. Why is it good?

Kiwano

is a fruit that is considered very rich in fiber. In addition, it has Relatively large amounts of sodium, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin B6, iron and even protein. In addition, 100 grams of Kiwano has vitamin C that can provide about 40 percent of the recommended daily intake.

4. Black Sapote

What is?

Black Spota grows mainly in South and Central America.

Its fruit, in a rather unique way, reminds many people of the taste of chocolate pudding, which is why it was also nicknamed the "chocolate fruit".

Today, due to the growing demand for the exotic fruit, it has also started to be grown in agricultural areas in Israel, thanks to the unique climate conditions in our region, which allow this tree to thrive.

Why is it good?

Besides the special taste of the fruit, it contains high amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and phosphorus.

The oil extracted from its tree is also considered a sought-after ingredient in the cosmetics industry because of its effect on the skin of the face and scalp.

5. Cucamelon

And more in the field of exotic fruits that resemble a cucumber but are much more irritating than it (in theory) - meet the cocamelon - the strange hybrid that we didn't know we needed between a cucumber and a watermelon.

This fruit looks like a miniature watermelon and it grows mainly in Central America, in areas like Mexico and Venezuela - and rather disappointingly, it tastes more like a cucumber than a watermelon.

However, its taste is still sweeter than that of a cucumber, with tart hints that feel like a lime.

Why is it good?

This is a very small fruit, which surprisingly contains a high amount of nutrients in relation to its size.

It has powerful antioxidants, potassium as well as vitamins C, E and K.
