The shark scare continues in the coastal state of Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil, where attacks have multiplied in recent weeks: another teenager suffered an amputation yesterday following a bite.
Kaylane Timoteo Freitas, 15, lost part of her left arm after being attacked by a shark while swimming off Piedade beach in the metropolitan area of the capital, Recife.
The girl was operated on at the Hospital da Restauracao and her conditions are "stable".
On the same beach the day before, a 14-year-old had also been attacked, and his right leg was amputated.
"We will take back the shark incident monitoring committee, we will call the universities" to investigate the situation, said the governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra.
On some beaches in Pernambuco there are areas where swimming is forbidden and on others it is advisable to enter the sea with caution.
Two weeks ago a surfer was injured by a shark on a beach in Olinda, a tourist city not far from Recife known for its crowded carnivals.
