The announcement came from Russian Defense Minister Serghei Shoigu, adding that the city in the Ukrainian Donbass represents a key defensive line for Ukrainian troops and its capture will allow the Russians to "continue the advance deep into the Ukrainian defences".

According to an interactive map posted on the Internet by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces control 40% of the city.

The map of the US study center, which shows the ground movements of Moscow's soldiers updated to yesterday, indicates that the Russian-controlled area extends - from the eastern side - almost to the center of the city.

In the usual evening message to the country, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had given directives to the Army to find "all forces"

to defend Bakhmut.

"I asked the General Staff to find the appropriate forces to help defend Bakhmut, no part of Ukraine can be abandoned," he said.
