With just a few care tricks, they stay fresh for longer.

Munich – It will take a few more weeks, but spring will officially be around the corner soon.

With the onset of warmer temperatures, many are not only happy about spring flowers sprouting in the garden, but also buy some for the home.

The tulip in particular is a popular cut flower, growing from around the end of March to mid-May.

But how can tulips survive the longest indoors?

The online portal “myHOMEBOOK” reveals how tulips last the longest as cut flowers in a vase.

So there are six tips on how to give tulips the best conditions at home.

Keeping vases fresh for longer: Cut and store tulips correctly

Tip 1:

Regardless of whether the tulips are bought in the supermarket, are a gift or are freshly picked from the field: Before they go into the vase, they should be cut properly.

Don't use scissors for this, use a sharp knife.

Otherwise the stems could be crushed.

An expert advises "myHOMEBOOK" not to cut the stems at an angle, but to cut them straight so that the tulips can absorb a lot of water.

The time of day also plays a role when cutting cut flowers.

Tip 2:

When you get home, the tulips should not only be placed in the water, but also in a dark and cooler place at the beginning.

This helps the flowers to recover first and gather strength that will allow them to bloom longer in the long run.

A cooler location also ensures that the tulips last longer the rest of the time.

Of course they need light, but according to the online portal they do not like direct sunlight.

Drafts or heating air in the vicinity should also be avoided.

Tip 3:

It is important with tulips that no leaves should touch the water - so it is better to cut them off as soon as they are at a low height and hang in the water.

Tulips don't need much of that anyway.

So it should be enough to place the tulips in about 10 cm deep water and change it every two days.

Tip 4:

If you want to combine tulips in a vase with other cut flowers, you have to be careful according to "myHOMEBOOK".

Because while indoor plants are completely harmless in the same room, other flowers in the vase can be fatal to the tulips.

"You should absolutely avoid putting tulips in a vase with other spring bloomers," said Uwe Kunert, head of the experimental operation at the Leibniz Institute for Vegetable and Ornamental Plant Production.

For example, due to the secretion of a slimy sap, daffodils would ensure that the tulips could absorb less water.

Tip 5:

If you notice that your tulips in the vase at home are suddenly growing, you can stop this.

However, this could involve a risk.

While flower expert Michaela Brendel speaks to the online portal for the tip of piercing the stem below the flower head with a needle, other experts are critical of the trick.

Regardless of whether it works, it would give bacteria a quicker chance to invade and damage the flower.

Tip 6:

The last trick is more of a first aid for the cut tulips. If they haven't been at home long and are already sadly hanging their heads, the "myHOMEBOOK" experts advise cutting the stems again and putting the flowers together wrap it completely in newspaper to stabilize it.

Wrapped in the paper, they should then be put back in the water for an hour so that they can recover with the additional help.
