(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 08 - "The Italian Coast Guard has never shirked and will never shirk its responsibility for rescuing those in danger at sea, our actions and the approximately 60,000 people saved last year alone say so." , unattainable results that make the sense of a commitment, yours, which goes far beyond the ordinary".

This is a passage from the message sent yesterday by the commander of the Coast Guard, Nicola Carlone, to the entire Corps.

"These are sad days, days in which the immense pain for the loss of so many human lives at sea must come to terms with the need and duty to recover at least the bodies of the victims of this terrible shipwreck - writes the commander -.

In these difficult moments, however, awareness of the priceless heritage made up of our tradition, professionalism and competence must never fail, the result not only of 158 years of valiant history but also of recent businesses, lives snatched from death and danger, of daily work in favor of the country". "A heritage which, as recalled by our minister - he adds -, you honor every day with sacrifice and dedication in your commitment, at the service of the community and of the State, to respond to the new challenges of safety at sea with ever greater courage and professionalism".

"To you - concludes Commander Carlone - the task of continuing to work with professionalism and determination, and doing what made the country proud of you. To me that of enhancing, protecting and strengthening the identity of the Italian Coast Guard, which has the function of maritime rescue an essential pillar of our work, and renew my confidence in you and with it the pride of being your Commander-General".
