In the context of a "widespread cyber war", Italy is also in the crosshairs: in 2022 there were 188 cyber attacks against our country, with an increase of 169% over the year.

Worldwide, the growth was 21%.

These are the data from the annual report of Clusit, the Italian Association for Information Security, conducted on 148 countries.

“With 2,489 major incidents globally, 2022 is the worst year ever for cybersecurity,” experts say.

The data aggregated by continent confirms "the percentage preponderance of victims in America (38%), against Europe at 24% and Asia at 8%".

The Clusit analysis shows a clear prevalence of attacks for cybercrime purposes and significant economic implications linked to the spread of ransomware: they are 82% of the total, up 15% on 2021. For Italy the percentage rises to 93 %, up 150% compared to 2021.

Worldwide, the main victims are once again the 'multiple targets' (22%), with an increase of 97% on 2021, "these are untargeted attack campaigns, which continue to cause significant effects ".

This is followed by the government, PA and health sector (12%).

In Italy, the greatest pressure from the attacks is on the Made in Italy manufacturing companies, in the technical-scientific sector and professional services.

Over 80% had very serious consequences.

Malware represents the technique with which 37% of global attacks are launched;

followed by vulnerabilities (12%), phishing and social engineering (12%), up 52%.

Malware attacks also prevail in our country, they are 53% of the total and have serious or very serious impacts in 95% of cases.

Furthermore, according to Clusit, as many as 64% of incidents globally are caused by "clumsy" actions by users or IT staff in companies.

 "In the last five years there has been a substantial change in global levels of global cyber-insecurity - the researchers comment - which has not been matched by an adequate increase in the countermeasures adopted by defenders".

In our country, says the president of Clusit, Gabriele Faggioli, "further evolution is needed in the approach to cybersecurity. It is necessary not only that the regulatory driver remain, but that assessment and management processes are implemented at all levels of risk for the business, designed to adequately calibrate investments on the basis of real needs".
