(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 09 - "The Lebanese population is experiencing a crisis of historic proportions, it is a country almost on its knees. The bar of social costs is rising more and more and the country's economic conditions are disastrous. Despite this, this situation does not has an important impact on the Unifil peace mission. Ours is an operation of interposition between Israel and Lebanon and therefore this crisis at the moment has no impact except to the extent that the Unifil mission enters the human dimension of the Lebanese, who welcome us favorably" .
So General Roberto Vergori, commander of the western sector of the UN mission in Lebanon, called Unifil.
Regarding the political stalemate in the country, Vergori added: "We hope it will soon pass to a white smoke for the
election of the President of the Republic in Lebanon". Speaking in general of Unifil, Vergori explained that "it is not currently possible to establish a duration for the mission, which is not conditioned by the weather.
At this stage there is a wall under construction by Israel, already along a line of 17 kilometers, gradually replacing the wire mesh.
The conditions for the recognition of the borders between Lebanon and Israel are there - adds Vergori - but it is the political will that has an impact". Furthermore "there are still land and sea violations on the 'blue line', trivial facts which however can always risk creating escalation between the two countries .
