Many people worry about how high their pension will be later - and whether there is a risk of poverty in old age.

But how much would you have to earn today to get 2,500 euros a month in the future?

The fear of old age, or rather: the threat of poverty in old age, plagues many people in Germany.

Is the later pension sufficient to live on at all - and can the current standard be maintained?

In the first step, also to reduce fears or to take steps if necessary, the Stiftung Warentest,

for example, advises

a consultation with the

pension insurance company.

It is also important to know how the personal pension is calculated and what deductions are due for certain years.

Of course, the current – and previous – salary also plays a role in the amount of the pension.

How much would it have to be for 2,000 euros a month.

Or even better: for a monthly pension of 2,500 euros.

Pension of 2,500 euros: How high should the salary be now?

It sounds like a dream: a monthly pension of 2,500 euros.

And for most people in Germany it will probably remain just that: a dream.

According to statistics from the

German pension insurance,

just 3.2 percent of all pensioners in Germany received more than 2,100 euros a month in 2021.

If you want to receive a monthly pension of 2,500 euros, you have to earn an above-average amount - ideally from the first day of work and continuously.

In numbers it would look like this:

  • Men

    (West): 5,610.44 euros (3,290 euros x 1.7053 pension points)

  • Men

    (East): 4,993.38 euros (3,150 euros x 1.5852 pension points)

  • Women

    (West): 7,984.17 euros (3,290 euros x 2.4268 pension points)

  • Women

    (East): 5,329.49 euros (3,150 euros x 1.6919 pension points)

These calculations are based on the average wage for 2022 (west: 3,290 euros, east: 3,150 euros).

Anyone who earns just as much would also have to pay into the pension fund for a good 69 or 70 years (west/east).

An impossibility.

The gap can be closed with additional pension points, which were used in the calculation above.

By the way: periods of raising children can also be counted towards the pension.

More pension points than usual per year

In order to close the gap to the actually necessary 69 or 70 years of contributions, as many pension points must theoretically be collected as follows:

Ten tax tricks: How to save money on your tax return

  • Men

(West): 1.7053 pension points per year (69.4059 pension points/40.7 contribution years)

  • Men

(East): 1.5852 pension points per year (70.3829 pension points/44.4 contribution years)

  • Females

(West): 2.4268 pension points per year (69.4059 pension points/28.6 contribution years)

  • Females

(East): 1.6919 pension points per year (70.3829 pension points/41.6 contribution years)

The basis for the contribution years mentioned here is a report from the pension insurance from 2022. On July 1, 2021, pensioners had an average of 40.7 and 44.4 contribution years (West and East), pensioners 28.6 and 41.6 contribution years (West and east).

But be careful: the calculation only works in theory.

The highest possible pension points were only 1.5 to 1.9 until 2002.

Instead of collecting more points, you would actually have to collect more contribution years than the German average does in order to get the monthly pension of 2,500 euros.

2,500 euros pension almost impossible - especially for women

As nice as the dream may be, the reality is different for most pensioners in Germany.

On average, at the end of 2020, men had a monthly pension of EUR 1,172/1,249 and women EUR 741/1,065 (west/east).

For information: The current pension point values in December 2022 were 36.02 euros in the west and 35.52 euros in the east.

A monthly pension of 3,000 euros is also very rare.
