(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 09 - Ben van Beurden, who recently left his post as CEO of Shell to retire, received record payments last year, earning almost 10 million pounds (11 million euros).
This comes after the Anglo-Dutch energy giant raked in super profits thanks to booming oil and gas prices on the international market.
The remuneration of the top manager, considering the salary and bonuses, increased by 53% compared to that of 2021, prompting strong criticism in the United Kingdom grappling with the cost of living crisis aggravated by high bills by NGOs engaged in the fight against inequality and poverty .
As the Global Witness group, whose spokeswoman Alice Harrison said: "Shell's chief executive earned in one year what a typical UK worker would earn in six lifetimes".
And she went on to criticize the energy system for allowing Shell and other energy companies to make huge profits by exploiting an energy crisis."
