For a dense, robust lawn, hobby gardeners should use the scarifier at least once a year.

Spring is the ideal time for this.

After the winter, every lawn can tolerate a spring cure.

Scarifying removes stubborn moss and lichen from the lawn.

This gives the grass enough light, air and water to grow vigorously again.

However, you should not start lawn care too early in the spring.

The best time to scarify the lawn in spring is from the beginning of April to the end of May.

In any case, the grass should already have started to grow.

For this you can use the flowering time of daffodils as a guide.

Ideally, you have already mowed the lawn two or three times, then you can be sure that the blades of grass will grow again.

The temperatures should be around 15 to 20 degrees.

However, you should only scarify lawns that were laid out two to three years ago, otherwise the young plants could be torn out.

Order when scarifying - that's how it works

Before scarifying, first cut the lawn as short as possible, about two centimeters.

Then you can get started - either with a motorized device or with a hand scarifier.

The weather should also be neither too wet nor too dry, then the lawn thatch comes off best.

That's how it works:

  • Adjust the scarifying height: The blades should not score the turf more than two to three millimeters deep, otherwise the turf could be damaged.

  • If the lawn hasn't been scarified for a while, run the scarifier first lengthways and then across the area to create a checkerboard pattern.

Longitudinal tracks are sufficient for a well-groomed lawn.

  • Only switch on the scarifier when you are in motion, otherwise the lawn can be damaged.

  • After scarifying, thoroughly rake the loosened thatch from the lawn.

If the weather is warm and dry, the lawn should be watered after scarifying.

After that, the lawn should be spared for some time.

For the perfect spring cure, you can lime the lawn afterwards, if necessary, or fertilize the lawn.

Bald spots are sprinkled with grass seed.

Then nothing stands in the way of a dense, lush green lawn in summer.
