Dave Gahan: “We wondered if Depeche Mode should continue”

INTERVIEW – The English group releases Memento Mori, its 15th album since its creation, and the first since the death of founding member Andy Fletcher in May 2002, a dark and collected record from a band that continues to reinvent itself.


Certified rock star, Dave Gahan knew how to remain an elegant and warm gentleman in all circumstances.

He confides with frankness on the fragility of life, and the present of Depeche Mode.

, your new album, is very dark.

To be honest, I haven't listened to it since the mastering phase.

But I was really happy that we decided to continue, Martin

(Gore, editor's note)

and me.

We had agreed that the record should open with

My Cosmos Is Mine

and end with

Speak to Me

.

We had a lot of songs but we kept twelve.

We still think in terms of vinyl faces.

Finally, it occupies three sides.

James Ford, the director of the album, would have liked to keep only ten songs.

The album is dark, no doubt, but not more than usual!

There has always been darkness here, but also light.

Whether in the body of the song, its melody, the atmosphere or my voice.
