March continues to break records: the reasons for the historical heat and how long it can continue

2023-03-10T19:22:59.877Z

An atmospheric block does not allow the entry of cold air. The effects of La Niña and the anticipation of another week of hell.

"Anomalous".

"Abnormal".

"Unusual".

Three adjectives with which the National Meteorological Service (SMN) referred to March to speak in this note.

It is that this month in some areas

"is already a record for the last 62 years and also for the entire historical record

. "

And the saga of grueling heat continues.

At least for the next week.

A new event of extreme temperatures affected the central strip of the country.

Between February 28 and March 7, many localities were under a felt wave of heat and several thermal milestones were broken.

First, why so much, so much heat?

There is an atmospheric blockage.

The city of Buenos Aires, La Plata and other municipalities in the Buenos Aires suburbs continue today under a red alert for heat.

"The constant supply of warm air from the north by a high pressure system in the South Atlantic Ocean favored the occurrence of these persistent high temperatures," the official meteorologists explain.

In addition to being sustained, these highs are late for this time of year.

The La Niña phenomenon helps clear the clouds and the thermometer marks the maximum.

Although it came to an end this Thursday, in Argentina we are still not going to perceive a great variation in rainfall.

"Despite the change in ocean temperature, the atmosphere maintains a La Niña circulation."

March burns like January.

Buenos Aires, for example, had seven days of heat waves

, from February 28 to March 6.

It feels as if there were 10 days counting to this Friday, but in meteorology a "real" heat wave is not the one we feel in the body but the one that is registered when 3 days or more in a row there are minimum and maximum temperatures above certain thresholds, according to each city.

In Buenos Aires the threshold is 32.3° maximum and 22° minimum.

The previous heat waves in March in Buenos Aires were from 03-18 to 03-22, 1980, with temperatures between 22.4° and 37.6° (lasted 5 days and was very late);

from 02-28 to 03-03, 1987, 4 days long, between 24.8° and 35.7°;

and from 02-23 to 03-02, 2017, a wave that lasted 8 days, with temperatures between 22° and 35.2°.

In the daily evolution of this hot event, March 1 and 6 were the days with the most locations under a heat wave: 30 and 35 zones respectively.

In addition, they detail that "with the unusually hot situation, maximum temperature records were recorded for March, which in some cases were the highest in the last 62 years and also in the entire historical record."

As an example,

Buenos Aires broke the historical record with 38° on March 2.

The towns of Ezeiza, La Plata, Mendoza, Olavarría, Villa Gesell, Bolivar and Junín, among others, also marked history in mercury.

At the same time, part of the central region of the country, and fundamentally the north of Buenos Aires, registered up to 8 °C and 10 °C of average maximum temperature above normal, "something exceptional for the beginning of March."

When does this heat end?

Friday did not bring the expected relief.

It did not cut the wave of high temperatures.

The entry of cold air was "weak" and "brief".

The clouds gave some respite from the sun and no rain was forecast.

But the maximum pointed to 33 ° C. And the suffered 35.6 ° arrived after noon.

We will have to keep waiting for the temperature to drop.

"There is still a long way to go to talk about whether the heat will reach the end of the month. But, if no event occurs (in the sense that cold air does not enter and the maximum temperatures in the center of the country drop), high temperatures are expected at least until Friday that comes", they mark from the SMN.

The next entry of powerful and persistent cold air would be on Saturday the 18th.

For now, the heat remains this Saturday, with a minimum of 24ºC on a morning with partly cloudy skies and light wind.

The afternoon will be sunny and intense heat: up to 34º.

It would be day 11 of high temperatures.

At night 29º are expected.

On Sunday it points to a minimum of 26º, the highest in recent days.

There will be clouds and there is a low probability of isolated rains.

The maximum could exceed 36º.

37º are expected for Monday and 35º for Tuesday, then the maximum is expected to be around 33º.

So far, the next entry of cold air in a powerful and persistent way would be on Saturday the 18th. Tuesday and Wednesday could be cloudy and unstable.
