One time you didn't seal the cheese well enough or you forgot the salad way back for too long, and the fridge smells really bad.

It's good that there are home remedies that counteract this.

A smelly refrigerator – most of us are probably familiar with it.

Maybe you forgot groceries in the furthest corner for a little too long, maybe something leaked and wasn't wiped away immediately, or the cheese was "smelkier" than the plastic jar was sealed.

There are numerous reasons for an unsightly aroma in the refrigerator.

However, since food is also primarily stored here, you should avoid using chemical agents when cleaning.

In general, however, they are not necessary at all – fortunately.

The refrigerator should be thoroughly cleaned at least twice a year.

However, it is better to do this more often.

Experts advise here once a month.

Stuffy fridge?

A home remedy can help

Despite the low temperatures, germs can multiply quickly in the refrigerator and thus threaten the food stored here.

Even mold can develop, which must be removed quickly.

This can often be recognized by the unpleasant, musty smell.

Therefore, the device should be cleaned regularly.

Bare minimum: very thorough twice a year (plus: when needed).

Household expert Yvonne Willicks recommends cleaning at least once a month to keep the environment as bacteria-free as possible: “To do this, empty out all the food and wash the removable parts with hot water and soap.

Please do not put them in the dishwasher because the parts can deform at high temperatures.” Then the household remedy vinegar is used:

  • Mix 100 ml vinegar with 200 ml lukewarm water.

  • Wipe the entire interior of the refrigerator with a microfiber cloth and the vinegar-water mixture.

  • A cotton swab helps with the dew drip to catch all the dirt.

  • Wipe off with clear water.

Pay particular attention to the joints, as vinegar can attack the rubber.

  • Put away loose refrigerator parts and food.

The good thing: Vinegar has an antibacterial effect and even if it smells strong, the vinegar aroma quickly dissipates.

If you don't like this smell at all, you can also use lemon water for cleaning, which has a similar effect.

Simply mix water and lemon juice 1:1 and use it to complete the steps above.

To counteract stinky aromas in the fridge, you can also use the following home remedies and simply place them inside the appliance:

  • sliced potato/apple in a bowl

  • sliced lemon with baking soda/soda in a bowl

  • Baking soda or baking soda in a bowl

  • Coffee powder or beans in a bowl

  • Bowl/cup with vinegar essence

  • a roll of toilet paper

By the way: The freezer compartment or the freezer should also be defrosted and cleaned regularly.

It can even save energy.
