(ANSA) - TEHRAN, MARCH 11 - Iran has announced that it has concluded an agreement for the purchase of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets from Russia.
This was reported by the Iranian official media.
"Following the lifting of the (UN) embargo on the purchase of conventional arms in October 2020, Iran has finalized the contract for the purchase of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets," the Irna news agency said, citing the Islamic Republic at the United Nations.
The agency did not provide further details on the contract.
The "Sukhoi Su-35s were technically acceptable for Iran (...) and Russia has announced its readiness to sell them to the Islamic Republic", writes Irna.
Iran and Russia have been in talks for years over the delivery of Russian fighter jets to Tehran.
The United States threatens heavy sanctions on any country that trades with Iranian forces, and has long said it has been alarmed by the "dangerous" escalation in military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, with Iran accused of supplying drones used in Ukraine, which Tehran denies.
According to the Iranian mission to the UN, cited by IRNA, the agreement on fighter jets "has nothing to do with the war in Ukraine, as there is absolutely no military cooperation between Iran and Russia in Ukraine".
