Barberino's, celebrates the category and collects some curiosities and anecdotes about the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

10 years of Oscar-winning makeup and hairstyling

The first Oscar was delivered on May 16, 1929, but we have to wait for the 2013 edition for the official assignment of the first Academy Award to "Best make-up and hairstyling".

Before then, in fact, the statuette was intended only for the "Best Makeup": an award born in 1982 following the controversies related to the lack of recognition of the efforts made by the team dedicated to makeup for the film The Elephant Man, directed by David Lynch.

Starting in 1993, with the delivery of the statuette, the efforts made by the hairstylists were also recognised, but the award was officially renamed only on the occasion of the 85th edition, placing make-up and hairstyle on the same level.

Rick Baker: a master of makeup and hairstyling

Rick Baker is a record professional: over the years, in fact, he has collected 11 nominations and won

7 Academy Awards

for "Best Makeup and Hairstyling";

a real record.

One of the most curious aspects is that he won the statuette twice for a film starring a werewolf: in 1982 with An American Werewolf in London (thus also becoming the first makeup artist to win the category Oscar) and in 2011 with Wolfman.

Nine Italians among the winners and nominees

From the 1980s to today there have been

9 Italian candidates for the Academy Award for best make-up and hairstyling,

three winners: the first was

Manlio Rocchetti,

who in 1989 won for his contribution in the film A spasso con Daisy, the second and third

Alessandro Bertolazzi and Giorgio Gregorini,

who in 2016 shared the victory for the film Suicide Squad.

However, Aldo Signoretti holds

the nomination record:

the historic collaborator of Baz Luhrmann – nominated for the 2022 Oscars for Moulin Rouge –

has collected as many as 4

, the last one just this year for the film Elvis.

Special Achievement Awards: when the trick is there…but it doesn't reward itself (alone)

Although the award was established starting from the 54th edition, the efforts of the "Makeup and Hairstyling" teams were also recognized in two previous ceremonies: that of 1964 and that of 1968. Back then, the Special Achievement Awards, the Oscar Awards that can be periodically awarded for

Outstanding Contribution, the winners went to William J. Tuttle

, for The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, and

John Chambers

, for Planet of the Apes, respectively.

Dallas Winners Club: A $250 Winning Look

The film Dallas Buyers Club, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, was made with a total budget of only $5 million.

Despite this, however, in 2014 he obtained 6 nominations, including that for Best make-up and hairstyling, for which Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews obtained the coveted statuette.

The budget for makeup and hair?

Just $250.

From 0 to 5: the number of nominations has changed several times

Since the first assignment, the number of films nominated in the category has changed several times: in the 1982 and 1983 editions only two titles competed (which also happened in 2003), then it moved on to 3 and finally to 5 nominations, a rule in force since 2020. The only exception was 1984, the year in which no film obtained a special mention for makeup or hairstyles.

Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, a record that made history

Directed by George C. Wolfe and nominated for 5 statuettes, the film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom won two Academy Awards during the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony: the one for the "Best costumes" and the one for the "Best make-up and hairstyling".

The latter was awarded to Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, the first two, and so far only, African Americans to win in this category in all of the history of the Oscars.
