18 years after it was established, and precisely in the shadow of what appears to be its period of renewed prosperity, culinary at least, today (Sunday) the Tel Aviv "Mesa" restaurant announced the closing of its doors.

The restaurant, which was established with great fanfare on the shoulders of chef Aviv Moshe, led for years a culinary wave that knew how to combine food and atmosphere, extroverted raw materials and an equally extroverted shell, for better or for worse.

Moshe himself left the restaurant after a long tenure of 15 years, and chef Assaf Stern stepped into his shoes, during which he placed renewed emphasis on the food, without neglecting the other elements that kept it active.

The semi-official statements on the part of "restaurant officials" were able to point to the protests last night at the Kaplan intersection in the city as a precipitating factor for the decision, but they should be taken with limited credence. Very much even, although the result is the same result - a sad lockdown.

"Masa" was opened in 2004 by the restaurateur Itzik Hamel and its direction was high, and immediately.

Its two spaces were designed in black and white, highlighted long marble tables and dominant lighting fixtures, and received daily oligarchs, politicians and celebrities from the country and the world.

Her menu offered luxurious dishes at equally luxurious prices, including mythological departures such as foie gras in chocolate.

"This is a friendly parting," Moshe concluded about three years ago, "I feel that physically I should be in other places."

Stern stepped into his shoes, knew how to stabilize this big ship with a slightly more solid kitchen, but the institution itself kept its guidelines, nurtured the great bar and knew how to survive the unfortunate Corona period, and fantasize about a new path.

"His compass is pointed in the right direction and he seems to have the ability," Avi Efrati wrote here about a year ago, "it will be interesting to eat in the mass in about six months, when the process will really take off."
