Women in Berlin will soon be allowed to be topless in the city's public swimming pools, the local government announced last Thursday.

The background to the move comes following a complaint about discrimination, filed by a woman who was not allowed to reveal her upper body in one of the German capital's swimming pools.

The Daily Mail reports that Berlin's Senate for Justice, Diversity and Anti-Discrimination said the woman appealed to the Senate's legal counsel's office to demand that women, just like men, be able to swim topless.

In response to the complaint and the involvement of the Public Complaints Commissioner in the case, the Berliner Baederbetriebe, the body that manages the city's public pools, decided to change its dress code.

Equality for all

Last year we published in Vala!

Tourism, the city of Göttingen in Lower Saxony in central Germany, will be the first in the country to allow women to be topless in swimming pools, this is to increase gender equality between the sexes.

The city's Public Complaints Commissioner, Doris Liebscher, said that: "The Office of the Legal Counsel very much welcomes the decision, since it establishes equal rights for all residents of Berlin, whether they are men, women or non-binary, and because it even creates legal certainty on the issue."

She further added that "now it is important that the installation be applied consistently and that no more prohibitions apply."

It should be noted that in the past, women who exposed the upper part of their necks in Berlin's swimming pools were asked to cover themselves or leave the pool, and sometimes they were even forbidden to return to the place.

At this point, it is not yet known when the new rules will go into effect.
