Hellish heat wave in Buenos Aires: new historical record of minimum temperature for March

2023-03-12T20:29:46.380Z

It reached 28 degrees. The previous record had been in 1980, with 27.7 degrees. In addition, there are 12 consecutive days of extreme heat.

The temperature is breaking all historical records.

The heat wave that hits the City of Buenos Aires and the Province does not seem to want to go away.

To find a similar situation, you have to go back decades in the past.

And even so, it is far from what is happening now.

Also, as the weeks go by, new records are broken.

And according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the extreme heat will continue throughout the week.

Mariela de Diego, spokeswoman for the SMN, confirmed to

Clarín

that not only the highs for March were exceeded, but also the lows.

"The highest minimum that had been recorded was on March 21, 1980 with 27.7 degrees. And this Sunday we had

28 degrees

, with which the highest minimum was given (in any case, you have to wait until nine o'clock in the evening)".

"We are living records of all kinds. Minimum and maximum, which yesterday Saturday reached 38.9 degrees and is the highest maximum for March. We are also living a

record in the persistence of maximum temperatures in Buenos Aires

. We have been living for

12 consecutive days with temperatures that exceed 32 degrees

. That had never happened in history," added De Diego.

And the rains?

With so many hot and sunny days, rain and storms are just a distant memory.

De Diego recalled that "

there is a low probability that it will rain on Tuesday evening

. And with this could come a very slight drop in temperature, which will continue around 30 degrees throughout the week."

And he maintained that "there is a tremendous shortage" of rainfall.

"The last time we registered rain in Buenos Aires was

on February 25

, with less than one millimeter. Before that, on February 9 it rained 9 millimeters. And 29 millimeters rained on February 2. Undoubtedly, this lack of rain makes that the ground warms up and the temperature shoots up as is happening these days," he pointed out.

The

red alert

applies to CABA and the Buenos Aires cities of La Plata, Berisso, Ensenada, Brandsen, Cañuelas, Magdalena, San Vicente, Esteban Echeverría, Ezeiza, La Matanza and Merlo.

Similarly, in the southern zone of Greater Buenos Aires the affected areas are Almirante Brown, Avellaneda, Berazategui, Florencia Varela, Lanús, Lomas de Zamora, Presidente Perón and Quilmes.

The same alert applies in the province of Entre Ríos for Colón, Gualeguaychú, Ibicuy Islands, Tala and Uruguay.

And, in Corrientes, for Monte Caseros.

The red level is the maximum alert ordered by the meteorological agency and indicates that the temperatures in that area can be "very dangerous and affect all people, even the healthy ones", so it is recommended to increase water consumption and not Exposing yourself to the sun in excess or in central hours (between 10 and 16).

On the other hand, the SMN maintains an

orange alert

for the northeast of the province of Buenos Aires in Tigre, San Isidro, Campana and Zárate, a large part of Entre Ríos and a large part of Corrientes.

The same warning is valid for the south of Santa Fe, northeast and northwest of Córdoba and northeast of San Luis.

In addition, the rest of Entre Ríos, all of Tucumán, Córdoba and Santa Fe, the southeast of Santiago del Estero, and the northwest, center and coast of the province of Buenos Aires are under a yellow alert due to temperatures that have a

"

high mild to moderate in health".

The yellow level that can "be dangerous especially for risk groups, such as boys and girls, people over 65, with chronic diseases."
