The Uzbek Sayfullo Saipov will serve life imprisonment for the death of 8 people, including 5 friends from Rosario, in 2017 in New York and for his collaboration with the Islamic State terrorist group.
The prosecution had requested the death penalty for the terrorist but the jury was not unanimous in applying that sentence.
Saipov was found guilty at the end of January for the deaths of 8 people whom he rammed with a truck, and after that the jury had to decide whether to impose the death penalty, as requested by the Department of Justice at the time of his indictment, under the Administration of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021).
But capital punishment must be pronounced unanimously, failing that, the defendant only serves life imprisonment.
