The hypothesis of
a challenge between friends
at the origin of the deaths of two 15-year-olds, overwhelmed and killed yesterday afternoon by a train at the Berbenno station, in Valtellina.
The two boys, according to what has been reconstructed, instead of using the underpass to reach the platform, climbed over the wall that separates the state road from the tracks.
"Perhaps a challenge, in vogue among many kids today, or crossing the rails just before the train arrives": is one of the investigators' hypotheses.
Just at that moment, the Trenord convoy heading for Milan Central Station arrived at high speed, which in fact should not have stopped at that station.
The driver didn't have time to brake
and couldn't avoid the tremendous impact with the two very youngsters who were thrown onto the embankment.
the boys had no escape, despite the immediate alarm raised at the Areu plant (Regional Emergency and Urgency Agency).
The Sondrio Police, the Polfer of Lecco and the Carabinieri of Sondrio and Berbenno intervened on the spot.
The Sondrio public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation, as per practice in such cases
.
Rail traffic in the Sondrio-Colico stretch was suspended for several hours with delays on the entire line and the organization of replacement bus rides by Trenord.
Many aspects of the tragedy remain to be clarified: whether the two very young men were alone when they made the rash act or in the company of other friends, who would thus have witnessed the investment.
The children who were victims of the tragic accident should have returned to Sondrio with a local train which also stops at the Berbenno station where the tragedy took place.
