Two white sheets between the tracks: this is the image of the tragedy that struck a small town in Valtellina on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
Under those sheets, the bodies of two boys, one 15 and the other 17 years old, run over and killed yesterday afternoon by a train near the small station of Berbenno (Sondrio).
The two friends,
instead of using the nearby pedestrian underpass, had decided to climb over the
concrete wall that divides the tracks from the busy Stelvio state road 38, perhaps with the intention of hurrying up and getting to the station to catch a train.
Just at that moment, the Trenord convoy heading for Milan Central Station arrived at high speed, which in fact should not have stopped at that station.
The driver didn't have time to brake
and couldn't avoid the tremendous impact with the two very youngsters who were thrown onto the embankment.
the boys had no escape, despite the immediate alarm raised at the Areu plant (Regional Emergency and Urgency Agency).
The Carabinieri from the local barracks, those from the Provincial Command of Sondrio with Colonel Marco Piras, the provincial commander, the State Police with also experts from the Scientific Office and the Fire Brigade of the capital of Valtellina were on the spot to ascertain the facts and collect the testimonies.
The prosecutor on duty also arrived at the scene and, after the conclusion of the findings, authorized the removal of the two bodies left covered by the white sheets between the tracks.
The Sondrio public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation, as per practice in such cases
.
Rail traffic in the Sondrio-Colico stretch was suspended for several hours with delays on the entire line and the organization of replacement bus rides by Trenord.
Many aspects of the tragedy remain to be clarified: whether the two very young men were alone when they made the rash act or in the company of other friends, who would thus have witnessed the investment.
The children who were victims of the tragic accident should have returned to Sondrio with a local train which also stops at the Berbenno station where the tragedy took place.
