In January 2023, the seasonally adjusted index of industrial production is estimated to decrease by 0.7% compared to December.

This was revealed by Istat, emphasizing that on average for the November-January quarter the level of production decreased by 1.0% compared to the previous three months.

Corrected for calendar effects, in January 2023 the overall index increased in trend terms by 1.4% (there were 21 calendar working days against 20 in January 2022)

The seasonally adjusted monthly index grows on a quarterly basis for consumer goods (+0.9%) and energy (+0.1%) while it decreases for capital goods (-2.0%) and intermediate goods (- 0.6%).

On a trend basis, increases were recorded for capital goods (+7.0%) and consumer goods (+5.3%) while there was a decrease for intermediate goods (-3.6%) and the energy (-7.4%).

Among the sectors of economic activity that show positive trend changes, Istat points out the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+15.3%), the production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+14.3%) and the manufacture of computers and electronic products (+11.8%).

The largest declines are recorded in the manufacture of chemical products (-10.8%), in the wood, paper and printing industries (-10.4%) and in the supply of electricity, gas, steam and air ( -9.3%).

For the food, beverage and tobacco industry, there was an increase in the industrial production index of 2.1% on December and a growth of 6% on January 2022.

"In January - comments the president of Codacons Carlo Rienzi - production records a disappointing performance, but what is worrying above all is the trend in the November-January quarter which, compared to the previous three months, sees a marked drop of -1%. which is evidently affected by the economic situation in Italy, still characterized by high inflation and skyrocketing prices, to the point that industrial production for consumer goods records a contraction of -1.2% on a quarterly basis. to intervene on retail prices, because the drop in inflation recorded in the last two months is only fictitious and determined solely by the reduction in energy tariffs, but it is not reflected in the daily expenditure of families and it does not help our economy and our industry".
