The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Pfizer's rapid nasal spray for the treatment of migraines, the American pharmaceutical giant said.

Pfizer said it expects the drug, marketed under the name Zavzpret, to be available in pharmacies in July 2023.

"FDA approval of Zavzpret marks a significant breakthrough for people with migraine who need pain relief and prefer alternative options to oral medications," said Pfizer's chief commercial officer. of Pfizer, Angela Hwang, in a statement.

A Phase 3 study of the drug found that it was able to relieve pain in some migraine sufferers in just 15 minutes.

"As a fast-absorbing nasal spray, Zavzpret offers an alternative treatment option for people who need pain relief or who cannot take oral medications due to nausea or vomiting," Pfizer quoted Kathleen Mullin, associate medical director at the New England Neurological Institute, as saying.

The treatment of the condition, which is usually treated with drugs taken by mouth, was tested on a sample of 1,405 people, with half taking a single dose of the spray and the rest receiving a placebo.

The spray was found to significantly reduce pain when assessed two hours after the onset of a migraine, which in addition to severe headaches can often include nausea and sensitivity to light or noise.

Pfizer acquired Zavzpret last year for about $10 billion from Biohaven, along with other migraine treatments from the company.

Every day there are 40 thousand migraine attacks in Israel

"Every day in Israel there are 40,000 migraine attacks and headaches are a major problem for humans," said Dr. Amnon Mosk, director of the headache and physical empowerment clinic in Ichilov's neurological system. "A few years ago, a study by the World Health Organization came out, which examined The burden of diseases on humans, and it turns out that the main diseases that cause the most suffering and functional impairment are backaches and migraines, more than cancer, diabetes, blood pressure and joint problems.

And it's not just that, headaches are a very common thing, it's a serious problem that causes a lot of suffering, there's no doubt that it's a very serious problem."

"Most people treat a headache as if 'everyone has it, take something and it will go away,' but this is a real and difficult problem that causes a lot of harm," said Dr. Musk, "There are several types of headaches, there are migraines and there are many other pains - and for everyone There is another treatment, and everyone should be given their own diagnosis and treatment." In any case, if the headache repeats itself a lot, it is important to check what it is, and not neglect it. "There are good treatments today, and there is no need to suffer," said Dr. Musk.
