A man with an explosive belt "probably from Lebanon" was killed on Monday evening in northern Israel a few hours after he set off a complex bomb on a major arterial road in Megiddo, in the lower Galilee
.
An Israeli civilian passing by in his own car was seriously injured in that attack.
An Israeli military source reported this to the foreign press according to which the terrorist was intercepted near the village of Yaara, a few kilometers south of the border with Lebanon.
The soldiers of a special unit who discovered him inside a car stopped at a checkpoint noticed that he was wearing an explosive vest and was carrying a rifle and a pistol.
As a result he was killed on the spot.
According to the military source, "the possibility exists" that Hezbollah is involved in this episode, even if the man's identity is not known at the moment
.
His driver was subjected to an interrogation.
In response to a question, the military source confirmed that the bomb used in Megiddo was of a type ('Klimagor' in Hebrew) used in the past by Hezbollah against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
In terms of workmanship, he added, it was different from the bombs recently manufactured by Palestinians in the West Bank.
In the meeting with the press, the military source said that
it is not yet known how and where the man in question crossed the border between Lebanon and Israel
.
It is not even clear at the moment why he decided to activate the bomb in Megiddo, more than 70 kilometers from the border with Lebanon.
The source then specified that in the meantime life in northern Israel has returned to normal.
According to the media, however, the episode has aroused concern in military leaders and yesterday Defense Minister Yoav Gallant convened an in-depth consultation.
He also today discussed the implications of the episode with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu
