Condiment Recall: Toxic Chemical Detected in Kebab Mix
The recall applies to the product "Shan Chapli Kabab - Spice Mixture" from the food wholesaler Ideal Cash & Carry.
Consumers who own the product should definitely check the best before date (BBD).
The spice is being recalled with the MHD October 25, 2025. The reason is the detection of 2-chloroethanol, as the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety informs.

The substance 2-chloroethanol is very toxic.
In food, the chemical can be detected above all in spices that have been sterilized with the substance ethylene oxide, as the Federal Association of Food Inspectors in Germany explains on its website.
The chemical 2-chloroethanol is a conversion product of ethylene oxide.
Toxic substance found in kebab seasoning: use of 2-chloroethanol banned in Germany
Fumigation with ethylene oxide is prohibited in Germany.
The association warns that both substances can be highly toxic and mutagenic.
In some third countries, however, this method is permitted.
In the past, mere contact with 2-chloroethanol caused death several times when it was absorbed through the skin.
The product should therefore not be distorted.

The spice mixture was sold in the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate.
Consumers who have bought the affected product can also return it to the respective point of sale without a receipt.
The purchase amount will be refunded.
