The small bookshop in the goldbeater town of Schwabach near Nuremberg is not only worth a visit at Christmas time.

If there is a model railway in one of the shop windows at Christmas, there is not only a well-assorted travel book section on the first floor, but also a parrot that plays many a joke with the customers.

Like the "Kreutzer" bookshop in Franconia, the "Jakob bookshop" in Nuremberg's old town is a place to go for anyone interested in books.

After a checkered history and briefly threatened with closure in 2010, it was finally rescued and able to continue.

It was one of the bookstores nominated for the 2022 German Bookstore Prize.

Award for bookshops: German Bookshop Prize

The German Bookstore Prize has existed since 2015.

An independent jury selects the winners.

In 2022, the Minister of State for Culture, Claudia Roth, selected 118 bookstores that had made a special contribution to literature.

The first three prizewinners each receive a prize of EUR 25,000.

In 2022, the first prizes went to the "Schatzinsel Bookstore" in Bernau, Brandenburg, "Friedrich Schaumburg" in Stade, Lower Saxony, and "Logbuch" in Bremen.

Decisive criteria for the nomination were a sophisticated literary range, innovative business models, a cultural event program or a special commitment to the promotion of reading and literature.
