A breathtaking fight between a lioness and a mother-giraffe has gone viral across the web.

A video posted on Instagram shows the lioness quickly running towards the baby giraffe, pouncing on it and trying to devour it.

The puppy was of course unable to fight back, and it seemed for a moment that all was lost.

But the situation suddenly changed when his mother came to help him - and even managed to drive the lioness away.

The NDTV website reports that despite the heroic reaction of the mother, many surfers did not really connect with the video, claiming that it was difficult to watch.

Survived the attack?

Not sure

Some claimed that given the nature of the attack by the lioness, there is a chance that the cub did not survive it.

"I think he's dead anyway," wrote one commenter.

"When his mother turned around, his head already looked like it was collapsing."

Another commenter wrote: "I know everyone here is on the 'that's the way it is in nature' section, but it's a little disheartening to know that some animals have more tools to fight back than others. Right? Are we all just meant to eat others or be eaten by others? This is survival of the powerful. It's just like in the movie with Sigourney Weaver (referring to "The Eighth Passenger"). And the third user responded simply: "I'm sad to see this."
